Best Lists

I’m excited to put together some lists of the best waterfalls by region and by distance. As of February 2017, I’ve blogged about 101 waterfalls, 75 of which are rated 2 or more stars. Obviously, this is by no means a final and complete list. I’ll plan to update this page every 50 waterfalls or so.

The steps to break ties within my 1-4 star rating system are as follows:

  • I am assigning half-stars for more precise ratings.
  • The best waterfall rating (apart from the ratings for the trail and experience) will be given preference.
  • Hikes with more waterfalls will beat hikes with fewer waterfalls.
  • If there is still a tie, the ratings of the secondary waterfalls will be considered.

Waterfalls on the same hike are rated together. Waterfalls with only 1 star will not be included in these lists unless they are on the same hike as a higher-rated waterfall. Waterfalls without a hike are assigned a trail score equal to the average of the other ratings.

A Ranking of the Waterfall Experiences in Oregon:
Ratings in parentheses follow this order: waterfall, trail, experience.

  1.  Silver Falls State Park, North Cascades. Total score: 12 (4,4,4). Total falls: 13. Distance of hike: 0-7.2 miles. I’m pretty sure that this waterfall experience will stay in first place even when the list is complete. A beautiful trail with 13 waterfalls, 3 of which have 4-star ratings – it doesn’t get any better than this.
  2. Elowah Falls, Columbia Gorge. Total score: 11.5 (4,3.5,4). Total falls: 2. Distance of hike: 1.3 or 2.8 miles.
  3. Latourell Falls, Columbia Gorge. Total score: 11 (4,4,3). Total falls: 2. Distance of hike: 0-2.4 miles. The tie between Latourell and Proxy is broken by the secondary falls on the hikes.
  4. Proxy Falls, North Cascades. Total score: 11 (4,3.5,3.5). Total falls: 2. Distance of hike: 1.5 miles.
  5. Horsetail Falls, Columbia Gorge. Total score: 11 (3.5,4,3.5). Total falls: 3. Distance of hike: 0 or 2.6 miles.
  6. Paulina Creek Falls, North Cascades. Total score: 10.5 (4,3,3.5). Total falls: 7? Distance of hike: 2 miles or 12 miles. I assigned a trail score of 3 as an assumption for the Peter Skene Ogden Trail. When we go back, this score may change.
  7. Wahclella Falls, Columbia Gorge. Total score: 10.5 (4,3,3.5). Total falls: 4. Distance of hike: 2 miles.
  8. Bridal Veil Falls, Columbia Gorge. Total score: 10.5 (4,3,3.5). Total falls: 1. Distance of hike: 0.66 mile.
  9. Sahalie & Koosah Falls, North Cascades. Total score: 10 (4,3,3). Total falls: 2. Distance of hike: 0, 1, or 2.6 miles.
  10. Hug Point Falls, North Coast. Total score: 10 (3,3,4). Total falls: 1. Distance of hike: Less than 1 mile. Hug Point is tied with Drift Creek. I ranked Hug Point higher because we enjoyed the experience more.
  11. Drift Creek Falls, Central Coast. Total score: 10 (3,3.5,3.5). Total falls: 1. Distance of hike: 3 miles.
  12. Blumenthal Falls, North Coast. Total score: 10 (2.5,3.5,4). Total falls: 1. Distance of hike: 2 miles.
