I absolutely loved the trail to Little Zigzag Falls! It hugs the river almost the whole way to the waterfall, and it’s very scenic. Plus, it’s short and easy.
The waterfall itself is not all that spectacular, but with such great access to the river, there is plenty of fun to be found.
My rating: Highly Recommended (3 stars) (Waterfall – 2 stars, Trail – 4 stars, Experience – 3 stars)
Distance from Beaverton: About an hour and a half drive east
Nearest town: Government Camp
Nearest city: Portland
Length of round-trip hike: About .6 mile
Best season to visit: Since this waterfall is located on Mt. Hood, the area will have snow in the winter and maybe even the spring. So if you visit outside of summer, be prepared for that possibility. We visited in July, and it was delightful.
Things to know: A recreation pass is required to park at the trailhead May 15-Oct. 1.
Toilet / Amenities: None
How to get there:
- From Rhododendron, drive 4 miles east on Hwy 26. (From Yocum Falls, drive 2.2 miles west.)
- Turn onto Forest Service Road 2639 (Kiwanis Camp Road).
- Follow the road to its end (approximately 2.25 miles).
